There’s no experience quite like watching a movie in the open air, surrounded by stunning scenery in the heart of a super-cool city. Add a blanket, deckchair and good weather, and you’ve got a perfect night – so if you’re planning to take a cheap flight to Europe next summer be sure to stop by one of these open-air cinemas for a film or two.
Freiluftkino Kreuzberg, Berlin – May to September
It’s hardly surprising that the super-cool city of Berlin has a number of open-air cinemas, but one of the oldest is the Freilftkino Kreuzberg, located in a lush green park in the south of the city. Movies are shown throughout the summer and the genres range from classic to contemporary art-house, plus German films will be shown with English subtitles so tourists can enjoy a movie too.
Sala Montjuïc, Barcelona – June to August
Set in the grounds of Montjuïc Castle, Barcelona’s open-air cinema plays host every summer to a schedule of classic, cutting-edge and short films, and often even live music concerts to ensure that there’s always something for everyone. With almost guaranteed good weather and stunning scenery providing a backdrop for the movie, Sala Montjuïc should be an essential part of your Barcelona break.
Pluk de Nacht, Amsterdam – August
For around a decade, the residents of Amsterdam have enjoyed the Pluk de Nacht film festival each August at Het Stenen Hoofd, near Central Station. Each night during this two-week festival, film lovers gather to grab a deckchair and blanket, and enjoy the best new independent movies whilst an open fire crackles away – but since each Pluk de Nacht movie showing is completely free, you’ll have to get there early to secure a spot!
Cinéma au Clair de Lune, Paris – August
Parisians aren’t normally noted for their relaxed approach to life, but if you visit Paris during August you’ll see a whole new side to the city. It’s during this month that the locals sit back and enjoy open-air movies as part of Cinéma au Clair de Lune, which takes place in various stunning locations across the city – and sometimes, the location is specifically chosen as it makes an appearance in the movie.
