Information and travel tips you can use for all your travels.
BEFORE YOU LEAVE
- Give family and/or friends important information such as flight schedule and –numbers, hotel information and telephone numbers, so you can be contacted in case of emergency.
- Make two copies of passports, visas, airline ticket… One copy you leave with family/friends at home in case something happens. The other copy you pack with you, but in a separate place then the originals you have with you.
- Make sure your passports are still valid.
- Check your overseas medical insurance coverage: Ask your medical insurance company if your policy applies overseas, and if it covers emergency expenses such as medical evacuation. If it does not, consider supplemental insurance.
- If you need to bring your own syringe for medical reasons, ask your doctor for a document that explains why. Because at the border they may think you want to do something else with it!
- If you need special medications, make sure to bring enough. You can probably find it in the country you’re visiting, but under a different name, etc. which makes it difficult to find. And you don’t want to waste time on your vacation doing that!
- Make sure you check your expiration dates of the medicine you’re bringing before you leave.
- If you wear glasses or contacts, make sure you bring spare ones! If you’re flying, pack them in your carry-on, in case your checked luggage gets lost!
- Ask a neighbor, family member or friend to empty your mail, because a full mailbox attracts unwanted visitors!
- Check plane, train, and bus times before you depart on your vacation.
TRAVELING
- If you’re traveling with a car and you park your somewhere, make sure doors are closed and keep valuables out of sight.
- Carry passports, money… with you in a special money belt.
AT DESTINATION
- At crowded places (beach, city…) make sure you don’t carry too much money with you. Passports, important papers you want to leave at the hotel safe, if that’s a possibility. Or consider purchasing special clothing or accessories to hide your passport, money, or credit cards.
- Don’t store all your money, cards, etc in one place. Carry some in your wallet or handbag. Use a money clip. If you are robbed, you may lose the money in the clip but still have your important credit cards and documents. If you’re on your own, put cash and cards separate. If you’re with two, divide cash and cards.
- Stay awake and alert when using public transportation.
