Places to Visit in Rome

One of the most famous places to visit in Rome is of course the Colosseum. But there are so many other highlights!

 

COLOSSEUM

A beautiful piece of architecture in Rome. This amphitheatre was built almost 2000 years ago and gives a great impression because of his huge size.

Open:

8:30am-4:30pm from January 2 to February 15

8:30am-5pm from February 16 to March 15

8:30am-5:30pm from March 16 to 24

8:30am-7:15pm from last Sunday of March to August 31

8:30am-7pm from September 1 to September 30

8:30am-6:30pm from October 1 to last Saturday of October

8:30am-4:30pm to last Sunday of October to December 31

Closed January 1, December 25

The ticket office closes one hour before closing time.

Full € 12.00 Reduced € 7.50 for EU members between 18-24 years*

FORUM ROMANUM

In the ancient days, this used to be the center of the city.
Open: 9 AM – 1 hour before sunset daily (see  Colosseum above)

TREVI FOUNTAIN

This is probably one of the nicest fountains in Rome. They say if you throw in a coin over your left shoulder, you will return to Rome. On a sunny day it’s great to just sit and enjoy a gelato while looking at this amazing fountain.

SPANISH STEPS

These steps are a nice place to meet with people. Tourists relax on the steps in the sun overlooking Piazza di Spagna. It`s a especially beautiful when the flowers are all blooming!

VATICAN CITY

 

Saint Peters Cathedral, this is probably one of the most famous churches of Europe.

HOURS: Basilica: October-March: 7AM–6PM / April–September: 7AM–7PM
ADMISSION: Basilica is free. (Climbing the Cupola: 6 euros* = stairs, 7 euros* = elevator) More information.
Remember: no bare shoulders or knees. (Both men and women.)

If you want to visit the Sistine Chapel, it`s part of the Vatican Museums and that entrance is a 10-15 min. walk along the Vatican Wall from St. Peter’s Square. In the Sixtine chapel, you’ll be amazad by Michelangelo’s extraordinary fresco covering the great ceiling.

HOURS: daily from 8.30AM – 4PM, CLOSED on holidays and SUNDAYS, except last Sunday of each month!
ADMISSION: 15 euros*. The admission ticket to the Vatican Museums is valid for visiting the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel only on the date of purchase. (If you buy your ticket online, you pay a 4 euro fee, but skip the line. Too be honest, the line wasn`t that long when I went and I didn`t think it was worth buying a ticket online.)

Note: don`t forget before you get to the Sistine chapel you walk through the whole Vatican Museum. You can`t take photos at the Sistine Chapel.

TIP: On the last Sunday of each month the entrance to Vatican museums is free!

One more tip I got myself and I want to share, you can take an elevator up National Monument of Victor Emmanuel II and have stunning panoramic views over the city of Rome. The price is 7 euros, but in my opinon worth it.

These are just a few of the highlights Rome has to offer, there is so much more to see! To move around between the places you want to visit while in Rome, you can opt for an Open Tour Bus that goes by the city’s highlights. It’s a hop-on-hop-off system. Or you can take a good map and walk around. I`ve tried the hop-on-hop-off bus and in Rome I didn`t really like it, maybe it was because of the traffic and that it was moving slow.
