Travel Diary
Early in the morning I got up to take my flight to Venice. And I wasn`t complaining, because for a minute it looked like the ash cloud would interfere with my travel plans. Luckily by the time I left, flights were running normal again.
I saved enough miles with my Continental frequent flyer program for a free flight to Venice and back from Rome. Yeah! A special thanks to Brussels Airlines for keeping me updated and providing me with information on the ash cloud and my flights.
A smooth flight of only an hour and a half by Brussels Airlines, got me to Venice at 8 o`clock in the morning giving me a whole day to enjoy Venice! The Venezia Express, a bus service, takes you from Marco Polo Airport to Piazzale Roma in around in 20 minutes.
Venezia Express: every 30 minutes there is a bus. It takes 20 minutes (depending on traffic) to get from the airport to Piazzale Roma. 3 euro/one way or 5,50 euro return included*
This was very convenient, as I was staying at a hotel near Piazzale Roma, Hotel Al Malcanton. It`s a small hotel located a 30 minutes’ walk from San Marco. Advantage of staying outside the Gran Canal is that the food and the shops are more affordable, because the closer you go to San Marco, the higher the prices are.
On the first day in Venice I met up with Michela (@rockytravel from Twitter) and we walked through Venice to see the San Marco Square. Venice is nice to explore on foot, this way you have the opportunity to find hidden gems, see the little streets and canals.
There are signs all over the city pointing you to the right direction of San Marco Square and the Rialto bridge.
A few of the pictures will show you how beautiful it was.
The walk we made, was similar to the “Walking Tour Venice” Michaela described earlier on my website.
What better way to end a day in Venice then with a cappuccino!
