During our road trip through Ireland we had the pleasure of staying at Liss Ard Estate in Skibbereen, West Cork.
Location
Liss Ard Estate is located two minutes from Skibbereen town center. It`s about 80 km (50 miles) to Cork and an hour from Beara Peninsula making it a great location to go sightseeing at these destinations. If you`re a beach lover, like me, there`s a nice beach only five minutes away called Tragumna Beach.
Not to mention the 200 acres of woodlands, meadows and lakes you will find at Liss Ard. You won`t be bored while you`re here as you can walk around the Liss Ard Gardens and discover the Irish Sky Garden, which is an earth and stone work called The Crater, made by artist James Turrell.
Food
At Liss Ard Estate you have the opportunity to eat out without having to go anywhere. This means you can have a lovely meal right where you`re staying as they offer lunch and dinner at the Estate. Every day (except Tuesday) you can have dinner and lunch is served on Friday`s, Saturday’s and Sundays. Sometimes you just want to relax in the evening without having to go out, but still enjoy a nice meal and Liss Ard Estate offers you this option.
Tip: I would highly recommend the Chocolate Fudge Brownie Sundae as dessert!
If you prefer going out, Mary Ann`s at Castlehendstown (only a 5 minute drive away) has lovely sea food.
Comfort
The room is simple, but elegant with all the necessities like free wi-fi, a flatscreen TV and a nice view. We looked out over the inner court. The bed is comfortable with the softest sheets making you feel like you`re sleeping on clouds.
Even though there are coffee and tea facilities in the room, unfortunately there isn`t a mini-bar. However there`s an honest bar downstairs.
Home away from home
From the first moment you step foot into Liss Ard Estate you will feel right at home. At the door you`ll find boots and jackets if you want to go for a walk and there are several rooms decorated for you to relax and enjoy. There`s the seating area by the fire, a TV room and a reading room where you can also listen to music.
Family Friendly
Kids are more than welcome here. They have their own playroom, a playground outside and there`s a tennis court. During the Irish vacation times (Summer, Halloween and Christmas) there`s a Kids` Club (4-12 years) and evening supervision to make sure the parents can enjoy a nice dinner.
With the open spaces at Liss Ard any energetic child will be able to blow off steam. You can take the family for a bike ride or walk through the estate, go kayaking or fishing. Plenty of things to do around here.
Want to discover the Liss Ard Estate yourself? The room I stayed at, was a Superior room in the Country House and these start from 135 euro/night B&B*, this is the starting rate in all three areas (Lake Lodge, Mews and Country House). Suites start from 195 euro*. (For more rates)
