On my recent flight back from Australia, I was chatting with the lady seated next to me. I told her about my job and my travels and she asked me: “What is the one travel item you bring on all your travels?” It sounds like a simple question but I started thinking. Besides the obvious things like a passport or my iPhone, I realized I always bring a scarf.
A scarf is versatile, you can use it as
*a blanket on the plane when you`re cold
*a dress/skirt when your luggage hasn`t arrived
*a sarong on your bikini outfit
*a wrap on top of your dress during a chilly night out
* a pick-nick blanket
and of course to spice up an outfit, making it look different each time.

I have to admit that since that trip I have to add an item. When I got back from Australia, there was a pair of Tieks shoes waiting for me. For those of you not familiar with the shoes, these are comfortable flats in many different colors, the perfect travel shoe. So why are they the perfect travel shoe you ask?
Because they are:
*Comfortable, probably the most important aspect of a shoe
*Go with almost every outfit (very important when traveling light and can`t bring all the shoes you would like!)
*Small to take with you, as they are designed to fold and even fit in a purse
*Durable, they`re made out of the finest Italian leather
Every pair of shoes comes with pants clips for when you`re out wearing heels and want to wear the flats instead, because they`re more comfortable. A bag to put your heels in and a little carrying pouch to fit the folded pair of Tieks.
Yes they aren`t cheap. Tieks start from $165 for a solid color pair. When I first saw the price, I thought the same, but when you see the quality of the shoe and feel the comfort, you understand why.

I loved that scarf tutorial. Brilliant! Before moving to Europe, i never wore scarves. Here they are THE fashion accessory and winter necessity (after shoes,of course). I was clueless until, luckily, my neighbor here taught me the basic European Loop and a version of the Braided Loop, but I’ve been wondering how so many Dutch girls get the various looks with just one scarf. Now I know! Thanks for that link!
Oh, and my favorite travel item has nothing to do with fashion, but it is comforting. I always take my journal notebook, in which I write about my thoughts, encounters and experiences…and decorate with mementos from my travels 🙂

Great travel item you take with you!
I always tell people that I travel with my “purple rabbit” I get strange looks – I think a lot of people think I’m referring to the vibrator! But it’s actually a small, purple plush bunny that smells like lavander oil that I keep on a key chain, along with my nail file, bottle opener, and mini maglight. It’s been with me on every trip. Practical, comforting, with a lot of good memories.
I also always have my blue speckled sarong/scarf – I’ve never done a trip without it!
I always bring a scarf, too! Sometimes even more 🙂 I like them to bring a little color and diversification into my (rather boring) standard outfit of jeans and a black shirt. And I got two more points to add to the scarf versatility list:
– It can be used to cover up a summer outfit when entering sacred places like a Catholic church in Rome
– Being a blonde, I easily get sunburned on my forehead so I often use my scarfs as a hair-band, which prevents my head from too much sun 🙂
